Chapter Eight

If anyone had asked him before, Chris probably would have said that being trapped in a house in a remote location with three hunky men didn’t sound too bad, but in reality, it kind of sucked.

The safe house was tucked away in upper New York state, well away from any towns or neighboring houses. There weren’t even any cows in sight, just trees and rolling hills. He was cut off from his family and friends, and he wasn’t allowed to accompany the team on their weekly supply runs. The only time he would be able to leave the safe house, until the trial began, was if he was needed to give a deposition.

There was a decent movie collection and library at the safe house, but he couldn’t surf the internet. There was only one computer in the house that had highly secured internet access, and he didn’t have clearance to use it because he was the client in this situation, not part of the team. He was getting behind on his comics, too, but he had a pull list, so hopefully the comic book shop would hold everything until he got back home.

His days fell into a monotonous routine that mostly revolved around trying to immerse himself in a book or a movie so he could forget he was trapped for a while. Finn made sure he got some kind of exercise every day. He liked it best when Finn took him for a long walk around the property. That at least gave him the illusion of freedom. When it was raining, however, they worked out in the small home gym, which wasn’t as fun even though Finn mixed up the exercise routines regularly.

Worse than the monotony was the polite distance Jason maintained. Jason had asked for a week to think things over, but the week had passed, and he still hadn’t said anything about whether he was willing to give Chris a second chance. Chris wanted to ask, but he was afraid of appearing pushy or needy or like he was trying to rush Jason into making a decision. Instead, he kept waiting and hoping Jason would tell him something rather than keep on treating him like he was nothing more than a client.

After about two weeks, Chris was tired of waiting. He was tired of being patient, and he wanted to break through the polite mask Jason wore around him all the time. He wanted to make Jason react in some way, to remind Jason that he had once desired Chris. Maybe it was boredom provoking him to behave in uncharacteristic ways or maybe it was his pride rearing its head, but as he stepped out of the shower that morning, he decided he was going to make Jason notice him one way or another.

Jason was scheduled on the morning shift, and he usually made breakfast around this time, which was why Chris paraded through the kitchen with nothing but a towel draped loosely around his hips. Fortunately, Jason was in there alone, and Chris smiled breezily as he waltzed in.
